Wang Yuezhi Taiwanese born Chinese PainterWang Yuezhi [Taiwanese born Chinese Painter, 1894-1937]

 

Biography

Born in Feb. 2, 1894 according to Chinese lunar calendar in Dingqiaozitou, Taizhong, Taiwan. Formerly known as Liu Jintang. He went to study in Japan in 1915, entered Kawabata Art School first and entered the Western Painting Department of Tokyo Art School. He went to Shanghai to take part in the national revolution by himself in 1920, adopted Wang Faqian, one of the founding members of Kuomintang, as his adoptive father, renamed himself as Wang Yuezhi, with an alternative name as Yue Zhi. Then, he returned to Tokyo to complete his study. In 1921, he graduated from Tokyo Art School, went to study in the College of Literature and Arts of Peking University and worked as a Western painting professor in Beijing Art School. In 1922, he, together with Li Yishi, Wu Xinwu, Wang Zhiyun, etc., established Apollo Society, the first Western painting research organization in Beijing. They also established Apollo Arts Research Institute to recruit students and teach Western painting. In 1924, he was a staff member of the Ministry of Education of Beijing Government. He prepared to establish privately-operated Beijing College of Fine Arts and was invited to act as the director of the Formative Art Research Institute of Peking University. In 1926, he was a consultant of overseas Chinese affairs in Beijing Government and concurrently the president of Taiwan Research Institute. In 1928, he acted as the dean and a professor in the Western Painting Department of the public West Lake College of Fine Arts. Invited by the current Ministry of Education, he became a member of the preparation committee and examination committee for National Arts Exhibition and a member of the preparation Committee for West Lake Fair. He returned to Beijing from Hangzhou in 1929 and held a personal exhibition at Youth Association in Beijing. In 1930, he was the master of the private Jinghua Arts Exhibition School and continued to establish the private Beijing College of Fine Arts as the president of the college. At the same time, he was also a professor of the College of Arts of Peking University, which was changed into Beijing Art School later. In 1934, the Private Beijing Art School was renamed as Beijing Private Professional Art School, and he still assumed the office of the president. He died of illness at the age of 43 on Mar. 15, 1937. Main exhibitions: National Exhibition of Arts in the 20s, Paris International Fair in France in the 30s. Published painting album: Collection of Wang Yuezhi’s Paintings.
