Rafael Coronel [Mexican Painter, b. 1932]
Biography
Rafael Coronel was born in Zacatecas, Mexico. He first pursued his art studies at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, then at La Esmeralda, which he left after only three months of study and promptly distinguished himself among the young painters of his generation. His first individual exhibit was held at the Galeria de Arte Mexicano in 1956. He was further honored as an established painter in 1959 when the National Institute of Fine Arts presented a large number of his works in a memorable individual show at the Palace of Fine Arts. Since 1959 he has traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, where he has had many individual exhibitions. (continued on the bottom)

Nace en 1931 en la Ciudad de Zacatecas, abandonó la carrera de Arquitectura para dedicarse por entero a la pintura. Estudió en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de la UNAM. En 1944 pinta su primer autorretrato y en 1952 recibe el Premio de Artes Plásticas del Instituto Nacional de la Juventud Mexicana. A lo largo de cuatro décadas de fecunda labor creativa, expone su obra en forma individual y colectiva en los cinco continentes, destacándose la VIII Bienal de Sao Paulo, Brasil, en la que obtiene el Premio Córdoba al Mejor Pintor Joven Latinoamericano en 1965, y la I Bienal Internacional de Pintura Figurativa en Tokio y Osaka, Japón en 1974, en la que recibe el Primer Premio. Está considerado como uno de los representantes más definidos del nuevo Expresionismo Mexicano.
En 1978, junto con su hermano Pedro Coronel, es declarado Hijo Predilecto por el Gobierno del Estado y la Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas.
En 1990 entrega su colección de Arte Mexicano para la creación del Museo Rafael Coronel que se encuentra ubicado en el Ex-Convento de San Francisco, en la Ciudad de Zacatecas.
