Biography

Edward Robert Hughes was born in the Clerkenwell district of London on November 5th 1849. Edward Robert Hughes is known for his magical, romantic works, which are rich with story and atmosphere. The nephew of artist Arthur Hughes, Hughes is best known for paintings like “A Midsummer Eve” and “Night with Her Train of Stars.” While studying his craft, Hughes spent some time as an assistant to William Holman Hunt, during which time he helped Hunt create “The Light of the World,” a painting now seen in St. Paul’s Cathedral. Once he established himself as an artist in his own right, he tended to paint in watercolor and gouache.
